In our own iteration of land art, Devin and I chose these mystical landscapes because of their apocalyptic visuals and their ability to create the right atmosphere for our text banners/lyrics; putting these vernacular footnotes of our generation into the landscapes was our way of low lighting the constant use of abbreviations in how people communicate through digital connections (BRB, g2g, LOL, and TTYL to name a few). We were emphasizing the growing human disconnect from not only the land but also from the articulate use of language by merging both of these concepts together into one visual frame; (combining current methods of communication with million year old barren landscapes).
The garments were linen robes inspired by those of ancient Egypt and Greece, much like what oracles of that time whore. The garments were also appropriate for hot climates. We are referencing the ancient oracles and modern female pop stars. Aaliyah’s lyrics “Dust yourself off and try again” are inspiring. The other lyrics chosen were from songs by other pop stars/muses: Meredith Brooks “Bitch”, Pink Dollaz “I’m Tasty” and Britney Spears “I’m a Slave 4 U”. As self identified feminists and whoreacles, these songs are simultaneously problematic and uplifting, but when we held the words to the sky and listened to the actual songs we felt inspired, so our cunty landscapes are padding for our bras that may or may not be burning.
