2011 SMFA senior thesis show
Materials: White play sand, cotton fabric, Ikea display case sculpted hair pieces on various objects, male beta fish in water in plastic container in footbath, beta fish food, thrifted plastic pedestal, crocheted yarn, cell phone in mouthwash in vase with crocheted yarn top, crystal cat litter, painted plastic garden pond, artificial dog, Leo Dicaprios face printed on fabric.
Fluffiology is the conTEXTURAL study of objects and their endless functions in relation to the body.
Materials/objects, ideas and references are acquired and researched then organized into groupings. Care, observation and time are portioned out to each object. Tactile rituals with the objects can act as catharsis. For example, lying backwards over a pedestal while a weighty object is balanced on your stomach can be healing to your spine and help physical and emotional balance. Eventually the objects become characters and the character/human body becomes an object. Using different forms of craft such as crotchet, knitting, sewing and restoration or altering of objects I am hoping to elaborate my pieces into forms that transcend their given materiality. During the period of time that it takes to crotchet, sew or knit an object I have time to meditate on the project in concert with the rhythm of the repetitive action.
